The Goal

A commercial orchard operation needed to understand tree performance variability across 170 hectares and approximately 50,000 individual trees. Traditional ground-based assessment would take weeks and provide limited coverage. The grower needed detailed insights into tree health, growth patterns, and yield potential to optimize management decisions and improve overall orchard productivity.

The Approach

To comprehensively assess tree performance across this large-scale operation, we deployed high-resolution multispectral mapping technology. Using precision imaging and vegetation analysis, we captured detailed data on every tree across the entire orchard, enabling individual tree health assessment and performance zone mapping.

Hardware Selection

The mission utilized a multispectral-equipped mapping drone capable of capturing high-resolution imagery at 2cm/pixel resolution. This system enabled detailed individual tree assessment across all 170 hectares of orchard terrain.

Data Collection

Our certified pilot completed comprehensive aerial surveys across the entire orchard, capturing data in multiple spectral bands including Red, Green, Blue, Red-Edge, and Near-Infrared. Flights were conducted during optimal conditions to ensure consistent, high-quality imagery for precise tree-level analysis.

Analysis

Multiple vegetation indices and metrics were derived from the imagery to provide comprehensive tree performance evaluation:

NDVI Analysis

Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) calculated from multispectral data identified individual tree health status and vigor patterns across the entire orchard, enabling precise health classification.

Growth Pattern Mapping

Temporal analysis of vegetation indices revealed growth rate patterns and seasonal performance variations at the individual tree level, identifying high and low-performing zones.

Performance Zoning

Detailed performance maps were generated showing tree productivity zones, growth rates, and yield potential across different orchard areas, enabling targeted management interventions.
