The Goal

A broadacre farmer in Central NSW required precise weed control across 236 hectares of fallow ground. Traditional blanket spraying would waste significant herbicide on bare ground, while manual spot spraying was impractical at this scale. The operation needed a cost-effective solution to reduce chemical use while ensuring complete weed elimination before the next cropping season.

The Approach

To address this large-scale fallow management challenge, we deployed high-resolution aerial mapping followed by precision spray application. Using advanced imaging and detection algorithms, we identified and mapped weed locations across the entire paddock, then generated prescription maps for targeted herbicide application.

Hardware Selection

The mission utilized a mapping drone equipped with high-resolution RGB camera for weed detection across the 236-hectare fallow paddock. For targeted application, agricultural spray drones were selected for their ability to load prescription maps and execute precise, site-specific herbicide application.

Data Collection

Our certified pilot completed aerial mapping of the entire paddock, capturing high-resolution imagery during optimal lighting conditions. The mission was timed to coincide with peak weed emergence for maximum detection accuracy.

Analysis

Multiple detection and mapping techniques were employed to ensure accurate weed identification and complete control:

Weed Detection

Computer vision algorithms analyzed RGB imagery to distinguish weeds from bare soil based on color signatures and pattern recognition, identifying all weed patches across the paddock.

Prescription Mapping

Treatment zones were calculated with appropriate buffer areas and exported as prescription maps for direct loading into spray drone controllers.

Targeted Application

Spray drones completed targeted herbicide application, treating only mapped weed zones with precision delivery.

Massive Chemical Savings and Complete Control

Reduced spray area by 69% from 236 hectares to targeted treatment zones, saving significant herbicide volume and cutting input costs by $5,400. This approach provided complete weed control while dramatically reducing chemical use, lowering environmental impact, and preparing fields optimally for the next cropping season—outcomes impossible with traditional blanket application methods.
